Project Update: Potomac Yards

Work is well underway at the development of the new Potomac Yards Metro station, scheduled for a 2022 opening. The site is in Potomac Yards, the southern portion of National Landing in Alexandria, VA. The $320 million station, serving the Blue and Yellow lines, is the driving force behind the redevelopment of the Potomac Yards area, dominated by 7.5 million-square-foot overhaul of Potomac Yard Center.

The new development is adjacent to Virginia Tech’s $1 billion Innovation Campus, one mile south of Amazon’s future second headquarters. It will also include a pedestrian and bicycle bridge with accessible ramp, and an entry pavilion. @AggDirect is excited to be part of the rapid changes to this area, bringing more accessibility to public transportation and an exciting new center for innovation and technology in the DMV region. Years of community planning have produced a vision for Potomac Yards, and a new Metro station along the Yellow and Blue lines is central to that vision.

The site is being developed by Potomac Yard Constructors, a joint venture of Halmar International and Schiavone Construction Co.

The WMATA Potomac Yards Metrorail Station site is located approximately midway between the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Braddock Road Stations along Metrorail’s existing Blue and Yellow Lines. The area is bordered by the George Washington Memorial Parkway to the east and northeast, the Potomac Greens neighborhood to the south, and active CSX tracks, Potomac Avenue, and Potomac Yard Shopping Center to the west and northwest.

Per Alexandria, the Potomac Yard area “represents the most significant redevelopment and tax base growth opportunity for Alexandria, with the potential to achieve the vision for an urban mix of uses near transit.” The rare infill station is expected to eventually support 26,000 new jobs, 13,000 new residents and “billions of dollars in new private sector investment.” To learn more, please visit https://www.alexandriava.gov/PotomacYardMetro.
